Principal’s Report

Dear Students, Parents, Staff, and Marist Friends,
The last fortnight has been a wonderful showcase of the vibrant life of our College. Our calendar of events was in full swing, providing rich opportunities for students to be recognised and to grow in their Marist characteristics. These moments are only possible through the dedication and generosity of our staff, and I extend my sincere thanks to all involved.
Celebrating Our Community
Sports Assembly
Thank you to Mr Booth for leading an excellent Sports Assembly. The event highlighted many outstanding achievements in the sporting arena. It was a proud moment for our students and a testament to the strength of our co-curricular programs.
Showcase Evening
A special thanks to Ms Gambian, the Leaders of Learning, and all staff and students who contributed to the Showcase. The evening was vibrant and well-received, reflecting the creativity and commitment of our HSC students.
Father’s Day Breakfast
Thank you to Mr Ward and our Hospitality Team for the preparation and delivery of the Father’s Day Breakfast. Providing a liturgy and catering for over 200 guests at such an early hour is no small feat. It was heartwarming to witness the strong bonds between our boys and their fathers, and the notion of family spirit was clearly on display at the College.
Marist Oratory
Thank you to Ms Adamson and Mr Chantler for supporting our students at the Marist Oratory held at St Joseph’s, Hunters Hill. Our young men performed with distinction against quality opposition. Congratulations to Andre Symeou, Matteo Colarusso, Dominic Galvan, Joseph Minns and Ryan Morton. A special congratulations to Matteo Colarusso, who won the Year 8 Division, further cementing his reputation as one of the finest public speakers in Catholic schools.

Year 11 Preliminary Exams
We extend our best wishes to our Year 11 students as they undertake their Preliminary exams. Thank you to their teachers for preparing them so thoroughly.
Celebrating Artistic Excellence – Clancy Prize Religious Art Competition

We are incredibly proud of our students who represented Marist College Kogarah in the Sydney Catholic Schools Clancy Prize Religious Art Competition, showcasing their creativity and faith through visual storytelling.
Congratulations to Gabriel Dela Cruz (Year 8) for his mixed media artwork titled “Echoes of Grace”, a thoughtful and expressive piece that beautifully captured the theme of the exhibition.

We also commend our Year 10 Photography and Digital Media students — Ethan Zheng, Michael Elhage, and Alexander Zongas — for their compelling photographic series “Celebrating Marcellin Champagnat”. Their work paid tribute to our Marist heritage with depth and reverence.

This year’s exhibition theme, “Saints Anchored in Hope”, aligned with the overarching theme of the Jubilee Year: Pilgrims of Hope. Our students’ contributions reflected this message with sincerity and artistic excellence.
We celebrate their achievements and thank them for inspiring our community through their faith-filled creativity.
Farewell to Year 12
As our Year 12 students enter their final weeks of schooling, we hold them in our thoughts and prayers. These weeks are filled with reflection, celebration, and anticipation. The Graduation ceremonies are a significant milestone—not only marking the end of their journey at Marist College Kogarah, but also honouring the relationships, growth, and achievements that have shaped their time here.
Graduation is more than a farewell; it is a rite of passage that acknowledges the transformation of our young men into confident, capable individuals ready to take their place in the world. We look forward to celebrating this moment with families and staff, and to sending our graduates forth with pride and hope.
Year 12 have been informed of the opportunity of holiday seminars leading up to their exams. Once again, I thank our dedicated staff who give up their time to assist with preparing our HSC students for the exams.

Professional Learning Day
The last day of Term 3 for students is Thursday, 25 September 2025. The College staff will be engaging in a Spirituality Day on Friday, 26 September 2025.
Attendance - Not Present/Late to School
As the term is coming to an end, I would encourage parents/carers to action all unexplained absences by adding a note to Compass before the end of term. A reminder to parents, that if your son is going to be late to school or is absent from school you are required to add an Attendance Note in Compass to explain this absence/lateness. Failure to do so will result in his attendance record reflecting unexplained absences. All unexplained absences will be recorded on your son’s semester reports.
College Tutor Program
The last day of the College Tutor program for Term 3 is Wednesday, 17 September 2025. The Tutor Program will resume for Term 4 on Monday, 13 October 2025. In particular, we would encourage Year 12 students to attend in preparation for their Higher School Certificate Examinations.

Father's Day Mass
On Friday, 5 September, the College community gathered to give thanks for our fathers, grandfathers and carers. Many thanks to Fr Yacub, our Parish Priest who always gives so generously of his time to be with us. Congratulations to our hospitality staff and students for their wonderful contribution to this celebration.
As we gathered to celebrate this special Mass, we give thanks for the love, guidance, and strength our fathers, grandfathers and carers bring to our families and our school community. May this celebration be a reminder of the profound impact you have on their lives and a source of spiritual renewal for you.
“St Joseph is the model of the educator and the dad, the father. I, therefore, entrust to his protection those who are fathers. Best wishes to you on your day! I ask for you the grace to be ever closer to your children, allow them to grow, but be close, close! They need you, your presence, your closeness, your love. May you be for them as St Joseph was: guardians of their growth in age, wisdom and grace. May you guard them on their journey: be educators and walk with them. Thank you for all you do for your children: thank you. May St Joseph bless you and accompany you.”
Pope Francis

HSC Showcase Night
Last Wednesday evening the College celebrated the incredible talents of our students in Art, Music and TAS showcasing their amazing Major Works. The night showcased the outstanding achievements and creativity of our students in these diverse areas. It was wonderful to shine a spotlight on the talents of these exceptional students gaining an insight into their creative processes and inspiration behind their work.
A Celebration of Student Artistry
Our talented artists showcased their unique perspectives and creative vision through stunning artworks. The Major works in Visual Arts and Visual Design highlighted the remarkable individuality of each student, with their creative ideas expressed powerfully through a variety of mediums such as, oil and water colour painting, photography, sculpture, and documented forms design. Each piece reflected not only their technical skill but also their personal voice, making for an inspiring and diverse collection of artistic expression.

TAS Innovations and Craftsmanship
The Technology and Applied Studies students impressed with their innovative projects, showcasing both their technological expertise and craftsmanship. From beautifully crafted work benches and entertainment units to functional study desks, buffet cabinets, hallway tables and an intricately designed poker table. The students produced an array of remarkable pieces. Each project reflected not only their skill in design and construction but also their creativity, resulting in a diverse collection of work.

Musical Melodies
Our talented music students recently showcased their HSC performances in front of an appreciative audience of family members, staff, and supportive alumni. The evening was a celebration of their musical journeys, featuring a diverse range of performances, from captivating vocal solos to skilful displays on the Bouzouki, Electric Guitar and Drums. Each performance was a testament to the students' dedication, passion, and hard work throughout their studies.

Our hospitality students did a fabulous job preparing light refreshments for the evening. It was wonderful to see so many parents, grandparents, ex-students and other visitors attending to see and celebrate the talents and successes of our students. The sense of school community and spirit was alive and present during the evening.
A huge thank you to Mr Kostovski, Miss Kirk, Mrs Appleyard, Mr Stewart, Mr Kazanis, Mr Combe and Mrs Diakanastasis for their expertise and endless support of our students.
Full details of the HSC Showcase can be found here.
From DUX to Mentor: Exam Tips from a Past Alumni Top State Achiever
Last Tuesday, our Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2 students had the privilege of hearing from a former College student, Mario Baroud, who was DUX of his cohort and achieved First in State for Mathematics Standard 2 in 2022.
Over the past two years, Mario has generously supported many of our current Year 12 students through our after-school Tutoring Program. His speech was both inspiring and practical, providing students with valuable strategies to prepare for their upcoming HSC Mathematics exam.
Mario shared the personal study techniques that helped him excel, emphasising the importance of smart planning, consistency, and goal setting. Some of his key tips included:
- Target Your Weaknesses – Don’t waste time on what you already know. Focus on the questions and topics you find most challenging.
- Traffic Light Table – Organise each topic into a “red, orange, green” system:
🔴 Red Light: Topics you struggle with—study these first.
🟠 Orange Light: Topics you are okay with—review these next.
🟢 Green Light: Topics you are confident in—light revision only.
This method helps narrow down your focus from 20+ chapters to just a few key areas. - Timetable with Purpose – Instead of vague goals like “1 hour maths,” set specific tasks such as “Complete Exercise 7.3 Q1–10.” This creates direction and accountability.
- Practice Past Papers – Once you have tackled your weak spots, work through past HSC papers to become familiar with different question formats and build exam confidence.
Mario’s message was a powerful reminder that success is not just about talent, it is about strategy, consistency, and grit. His advice was met with enthusiasm and gratitude by our Year 12 Standard Mathematics cohort, providing them with a clearer roadmap to exam success.
We thank Mrs Bulmer, who has organised this rewarding experience for our students over the past three years.

Year 12 Physics Excursion to ANSTO
The Year 12 Physics class visited the nuclear reactor and surrounding facilities on Friday 29th August. The students saw some real-life applications of principles they have and will encounter in the remainder of the HSC physics course.
The students initially had a lecture about radiation in its various forms and saw demonstrations of Geiger Counters and Scintillation counters. Students saw that many things emit radiation in our environment, such as fertilizer specific types of plates painted with paint containing Uranium. The presenter demonstrated radiation shielding with various materials in order for the students to deduce which type of radiation was being emitted from an unknown source.
During a tour of the various facilities of ANSTO, the students were shown where radioactive dyes, used for medical imaging, are produced and informed about the many steps involved in producing Molybdenum-99 that decays to Technicium-99 for use in radioactive tracers. Students saw research into how streams of neutrons from the reactor could show fossilised crabs could be detected inside a rock. And how train tracks could be tested for deterioration through analysis using beams of neutrons.
Thank you to Mr Christian Zilich for also attending this excursion with the class.

Year 11 SLR/Year 10 The Great Outdoors Rock-climbing
On Friday, 5 September, Year 11 Sports Lifestyle and Recreation (SLR) students along with Year 10 The Great Outdoor students embarked on a day of physical and mental challenges.
The event took place at the Indoor rock-climbing venue at St Peters.
After receiving expert safety instructions and induction from the staff at the venue students were then put through a day of rigorous athletic challenges. From climbing, caving, bouldering and spotting. These events allow the students to experience a team building environment that relies on peer collaboration for safety and success. While being physically demanding, rock climbing with a spotter requires a trust in your spotter and for some students an opportunity to conquer their fears.
The day was enjoyed by all students while providing an invaluable learning experience that will benefit them inside and outside the classroom.

RUOK?
To raise awareness and promotion for RUOK? Students in Years 7-10 PDHPE were involved in classroom activities this week to help build the skills required to seek and respond to help in different contexts. Activities that students were involved in included:

Research has found that those who are regularly asked, 'are you OK?' report increased feelings of wellbeing, and we've learned that a third of Australians say they've been asking others more often over the past year. That means many of us are already showing up for others in meaningful ways, but when it comes to conversations about how we’re really going, some people are less confident than others.
It’s natural to feel a little hesitant, but the good news is nine in ten Australians report feeling grateful, supported and cared for when someone genuinely asks them if they're OK - and that’s a good reason to give it a go. You might even be having these conversations already without realising.

On Wheels Safety Awareness Day – Friday, 19 September 2025
This year, the Sydney Catholic Schools ‘On Wheels Safety Awareness Day’ will be held on Friday, 19 September and is being promoted again across primary and secondary schools in the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney. This annual event increases parent and student awareness of safe behaviours when riding E-Bikes, scooters or skateboards.
Latest Data:
- Land transport accidents are the leading cause of death for children aged one to fourteen.
- On average, 122 children aged twelve to fifteen are casualties each year resulting from a crash on wheels (bike, scooter, skateboard). Transport for NSW suggests that there are many more casualties not reported.
- On average, 45 children aged twelve to fifteen years are serious casualties each year resulting from a crash on wheels.
- On average 69 young people aged sixteen to eighteen are casualties and 29 are serious casualties each year.
- Almost one-third (32%) of twelve to fifteen years olds and 42% of sixteen to eighteen years olds who were serious casualties were not wearing a helmet.
- Helmets reduce head injuries by ~70% and fatalities by ~65%.
- On average, 12% of serious casualties will be permanently disabled due to the crash.
At MCK we believe that understanding road safety is paramount. As you gain more independence in your travels, it's vital to be aware of the behaviours and actions needed to stay safe on our roads and pathways. We encourage you to reinforce with your child these key safety messages from Transport for NSW whenever you're out riding:
- Always wear a helmet when you ride or skate. It's the law, and it could save your life.
- Ride predictably and be visible. Use hand signals, obey traffic laws, and consider wearing bright clothing, especially at dawn, dusk, or night.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid distractions like mobile phones and always be on the lookout for pedestrians, other riders, and vehicles.
- Choose appropriate routes. For those under 16, remember it's generally safer to ride on footpaths away from busy roads. If you're 16 or older, you can ride on the road but always be cautious and follow road rules.
In our Year 7PDHPE lessons this week we will be exploring safe riding when riding bikes, scooters or skateboards.

Father’s Day Celebration & Tradition at St Joseph's Primary School Rockdale
Teachers of the MCK TAS Department team brought their skills and spirit to the Father’s Day celebration back at St Joseph’s Primary School, Rockdale. Mr Saludo, Mr Gorscak and Mr Lauria led a hands-on workshop where students finished and assembled laser-cut personalised keychains as heartfelt gifts for their fathers.
The event was a wonderful blend of technology and tradition, giving students the opportunity to learn about woodwork while creating something meaningful. The smile on the students’ faces as they handed over their creations said it all, this was a Father’s Day to remember!

Sports Report
The clearing weather saw a massive fortnight of sport for Marist College Kogarah. Both our AFL and Rugby 7’s seasons are finally underway, and our Tennis squad competed at the Conference 3 Gala Day over at Rockdale Tennis Centre. Our Senior Hockey side claimed glory in last week’s Gala Day and two of our Year 7 students have progressed through to the NSWCCC Athletics Carnival. Along with this, we held our annual celebration of sporting excellence where the 2025 Sportsman of the Year was crowned. Let’s hear from the coaches.
AFL
Junior Team
After a challenging start to the season marked by multiple washouts, the team finally took to the field against De La Salle Revesby. The team opened their campaign with a strong showing, securing a 35–15 victory. From the outset, they demonstrated clean ball movement, and a commitment to getting jerseys around the footy. The defensive unit held firm, while the midfield provided consistent drive, setting the tone for a confident start to the season.
In week 2, the boys travelled to Olds Park to verse a formidable Marist Penshurst squad. The boys faced early scoreboard pressure but responded with resilience and composure. A second-half surge, built on improved tackling intensity and smarter decision-making, saw them overturn the deficit and record a hard-fought win.
Two rounds in, the squad sits undefeated. The early signs are promising, and the group is building momentum with each outing. With continued focus and effort, they’re well-positioned for a strong season ahead.
Ms Alicia Bartlett and Mr Klayton Kilpatrick
Coaches
Intermediate Team
In their season opener, the MCK Intermediate AFL team faced a tough Marist Penshurst side and, despite a valiant effort, fell 52-36. For many of the players, this was their first taste of AFL, and they showed tremendous heart and determination throughout the game. Kaden Gallagher was a highlight on the day, kicking two impressive goals, while Dominic Gibbons and Geordan Giaouris were instrumental in the midfield, working tirelessly to drive the ball forward. Next up is De La Salle Caringbah, where a win should see the boys make the finals.
Mr Ryan Ziegenfusz
Coach
Senior Team
The Senior AFL team have started the season with a loss and a draw against St John Bosco Engadine and De La Salle Revesby. For a team with little to no AFL experience it wasn't looking good against Engadine in the first half going down 33-7 but once the boys got the hang of it, it was an impressive turnaround to almost sneak away with a win. The final score was 33-30 which included goals to Jett Brinkman and George Saidi. Isaac Dib also showed plenty of ability in his first game in the sport. The boys would have taken plenty of confidence from that second half going into round 2, and showed promise in the early stages against Revesby but in the end could only come away with a 37 all draw. A win in the final round this week vs St Pat's Sutherland could secure a final berth.

Mr James Stirton
Coach
Rugby 7’s
Junior Team
The Junior team opened strongly with a convincing 28–12 win over De La Salle Revesby, showing sharp attack and solid defense. In the second match, they fought hard but fell short against St Patrick’s Sutherland, going down 24–12. The team learnt from the first week and our players quickly delivered a strong performance against St John Bosco Engadine. They sealed the day with a 28–14 victory, finishing with two wins from three games.
Mr Kevin Pham
Coach
Intermediate Team
Round 1 28/8/25 - DLS Caringbah
The MCK Intermediate Rugby 7s were ready to face the season, coming up against heavy hitters DLS Caringbah first. The boys put up a good game and got better as the game went on but were outclassed by the opposition and ended up losing 35-12. Tries to Damien Taufateau and MoM Evan Parnell.
Round 2 28/8/25 - Marist College Penshurst
The team put their loss behind them and tapped into the gained experience from the previous game when against old rivals, Marist Penshurst. MCK dominated the game from start to finish, scoring 7 tries under the post, finishing the game with a 49-7 win. Tries to Lukas Kazzi, Charlie Koroibulu, Anthony Stapleton, Damien Taufateau, Jayden Tuione and MoM Justin Liu bagged a double.
Round 3 4/9/25 - St John's BOSCO
MCK faced another strong opponent in St John's BOSCO. The boys played very well and maintained possession throughout the game. The game was tied until the last few minutes when BOSCO edged us out for a 12-5 loss. MoM Charlie Koroibulu scored our only try.
Mr Robert Almeida
Coach
Senior Team
The MCK Senior Rugby 7’s team faced two challenging games last week with the lack of rugby experience from the team being clear. Both games ended with a convincing victory to Penshurst and Bosco. Hopefully the scoreboard reads differently in our bronze medal match with Revesby this week.
Mr Jake Gallagher
Coach
SCS Conference 3 Tennis Gala Day
In Week 6 of Term 3 Marist College Kogarah attended the Conference 3 Tennis Gala Day at Rockdale Tennis Club. Marist College Kogarah had two teams in each division for Junior, Intermediate and Senior competitions. Our students faced tough opposition from opposing schools throughout the day with only the Senior A team that was led by team Captain Daniel Carino and the Junior B team who progressed through to the semifinals. The Juniors put up a strong fight with Andre Baric-Gomes winning his singles tie. The Senior team made the final, however, they went down in a tiebreak to De La Salle Caringbah. This was the first time in a number of seasons that Marist College Kogarah did not return to school with all three trophies in hand. Hopefully in 2026 the weather is kinder to our students so that there is more time to practice with our younger players at the College.

All Abilities Football
Junior Team
Week 6: 28/8/25
Game 1: The Junior boys held their positions, while battling the strong winds, and pulled off a gutsy win against Marist College Penshurst. MOM went to Lucas D’Astoli for his athleticism and skill, scoring our first goal of the game and leaving nothing on the field. Special mention to Anthony Duong for his ability to stretch himself between defense and attack and score our second goal. Cruz Fernandez made some impressive attempts on goal, while Leo Chumkovski was eagerly defending on the back line, ready for anything.
Win MCK v MCP 2-1
Game 2: The boys were evenly matched against De La Salle, resulting in 0-0 draw. Joel Moala-Kami proved to be instrumental in keeping the opposition from scoring. Jonathan Lahanas skilfully played the ball around several defenders, impressing the sideline as we watched his debut game for the side. Thanks to James Dailianis and Zac Vragalis who put their hands up for goalie today - evidently both did a fantastic job!
Draw MCK v De La 0-0
Week 7: 4/9/25
Game 1: Another windy day at Peakhurst Park saw MCK up against an evenly matched De La Salle Revesby. Anthony Duong’s strong boot saw many near misses whilst Jonathan Lahanas displayed fabulous defensive skills keeping a 0-0 score at half time. James Dailianis entered the game in the 2nd half and immediately had an impact scoring the first and only goal of the match. A close one but MCK was too good in the end.
Win MCK v DL Revesby 1 1-0
Game 2: James moved to Goalie for the 2nd game against Caringbah and had a couple of difficult saves up high. Caringbah put together some skilful passing, outclassing our defence scoring 3 quick goals. Harry Mag once again put up his hand to keep goal in the 2nd half in what was to be a busy time for him. MCK shots on goal were rare but again James D featured with his never give up attitude, covering multiple positions and having some near misses to earn him MOM over the 2 games.
Loss MCK v DL Caringbah 0-5

SCS Hockey Gala Day
MCKs Senior Hockey Team Go Back-to-Back: A Legacy Sealed in Red and White
On Friday in Week 7, our Year 12 hockey squad—the first-ever champions from two years ago—returned to the Moorebank Liverpool District Hockey Club fields to have one last hurrah donning the Red and White.
The day began with a twist: misplaced jerseys. But in true Kogarah fashion, the boys turned adversity into creativity, crafting makeshift uniforms from sports gear and electrical tape. It was a moment that set the tone—not just for resilience, but for the kind of ingenuity that champions are made of.
Pope Francis once said, “May sport always promote a culture of encounter.” That spirit was alive in every pass, tackle, and cheer, the team finished with an emotional Sub Tuum after the final whistle of the grand final that almost brought a tear to former year coordinator Mark Hildebrandt's eye. The team played with tenacity and respect, reconnecting with another former year coordinator Mr Nathan Collins, whose presence added nostalgia to the occasion.
As the games rolled on, a new war cry echoed across the fields—the unmistakable roar of the Kogdogs. This, with the guidance of Coach Mr Frank Lauria and Manager Mr Thomas Saludo and with the fort being held strong by man of the tournament Daniel Di Napoli, the team carved through the five matches leading up to the final:
- MCK vs HCR – 1-0
- MCK vs MCR – 1-0
- MCK vs MCE – 2-0
- MCK vs SPCS – 1-1
- MCK vs SJBC – 3-1
- Grand Final MCK vs HCR – 1- 0
Captain Elio Fornasier was tournament top scorer with 4 goals, while Marcus Raad delivered clutch performances, netting 3 goals at pivotal moments.
Every player left the field not just with medals, but with memories etched in pride and with McDonalds Happy Meal toys.
Red and white forever!
Team Members:

SCS Athletics Championships
Six MCK students progressed through and competed at the SCS Athletics Championships on Friday 29th August. The weather was much more pleasant than the Conference Carnival and all of our students displayed true marist spirit throughout the day. A special mention needs to go to Sebastian Edwards and Theodore Kaliabakas of Year 7 who have both progressed through to the NSWCCC Athletics Carnival where they will represent Sydney Catholic Schools. Sebastian will compete in the 100m, 200m and 400m events whilst Theodore has progressed through for his success in High Jump. We congratulate and wish both students the best of luck!
